Carbon Awareness is one of the hottest topics, and with Cloud technology moving from \u201cnice-to-have\u201d to \u201cmust-have\u201d, the sustainability perspective of software applications has to be recognised, considered and acted upon.<\/p>\n

Sustainability is a worldwide issue that must be addressed with international collaborations. Many parts of the industry have developed energy efficiency metrics; however, software applications and their impacts have largely been overlooked. While the need for software-driven devices is growing, the necessity of energy efficiency is also rising dramatically.<\/p>\n

One of the main challenges is that environmental software metrics are complicated to measure. The reason is that software applications are often reliant on many 3rd party libraries and inefficient architecture such as multi- core arrangement and task scheduling.<\/p>\n

However, it is clear that the data centres through which these applications run are among the highest consumers of electric power. Studies have shown that data centre energy consumption continues to increase annually. In 2020, the data centre industry consumed around 196 to 400 terawatt-hours (TWh). This is equivalent to 1% to 2% of worldwide annual energy consumption…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
